The First Bulgarian Initiative for a Music Therapy Group “Music for memories”

Alzheimer Bulgaria Association supports two musical therapists, members of the Bulgarian Association for Music Therapy, in their online initiative for Music Therapy Group “Music for Memories”, which is innovative for Bulgaria. It aims at improving the quality of life for persons with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia by mobilizing their emotions, cognitive abilities, and memory, and also by creating an area for them to express their emotions, to communicate, and to feel more confident by singing.

The music programme is composed of fast- or slow-paced songs according to the age and the taste of the participants. It includes different music genres (usually songs from their youth) such as: classical, urban, patriotic, pop, folk, etc.

The music therapy group meetings are held online twice a month for an hour. The sessions are structured and oriented specifically towards persons with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. They begin with a welcoming song. In the activities, there are also respiratory exercises, rhythmic movements and dances, according to the abilities of the participants.

Even though there were doubts whether such online meetings will have an impact on the participants’ mood, it was proven that they are as helpful as those held face-to-face. The patients feel refreshed, part of a community and eager for the next session.

Music is part of the prevention of Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. It helps in maintaining emotional health and in reducing stress levels.
