On the 1st of October 2022, Alzheimer Bulgaria Association took part in the regular Saturday run, organised by “5kmrum”, for the fourth year in a row. The event traditionally took place on the first Saturday of October, soon after World Alzheimer’s Day on the 21st of September and directly before World Mental Health Day on the 10th of October. The aim of the event is to spread awareness about the importance of sport for mental health and prevention.
At 9 o’clock in the morning over 300 participants gathered in Sofia’s South park in order to take part in the event. Alzheimer Bulgaria Association called on all the runners to wear T-shirts with the motto “Let’s outrun dementia together” and provided them with more information about the aim of the event. Every year the cause gains more recognition and runners learn more about Alzheimer’s disease, and prevention, as well as the work of the association and the projects it takes part in.

This initiative encourages participation in regular runs in the park, which could help dementia patients as well as their families. These runs could have an influence in many ways – sport plays an important role in illness prevention, and it could slow down the development of the illness. Furthermore, such events can support and improve social connections.
We thank everybody who took part in this year’s initiative! We hope to see you again next year, on the first Saturday of October, so we can “outrun dementia together”!
