“Let’s outrun dementia together!” for the fifth year in a row

On the 7th of October at 9:00 AM at the South park in Sofia, the Alzheimer Bulgaria Association will join the regular Saturday run organized by “5kmrun” for the fifth year in a row, supporting the cause of preventive health through sport. Running with the cause “Let’s outrun dementia together” has become a tradition for the association and is loaded with the message “preventive health through sport”. This initiative aims to encourage regular runs in the park as a hobby, which could help people with dementia and their families in their role as caregivers in several ways:

  • disease prevention through sport
  • slowing down the progress of the illness
  • social communication

“Preventive health through sport” is the message, with which we want to celebrate World Alzheimer’s Day, which is on the 21st of September, as well as two other days dedicated to physical and mental health internationally – International Day of Older Persons (1st of October) and World Mental Health Day (10th of October).

Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia are some of the biggest challenges of the 21st century for all countries with ageing populations, including Bulgaria. In Bulgaria, it is estimated that there are over 100 000 people with dementia, half of them Alzheimer’s disease. At least 5% of people over the age of 65 suffer from Alzheimer’s. Taking into account the progressive aging of the population in all of Bulgaria (and all of Europe), the number of people with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia is constantly growing. Over 7 million people with dementia are registered in the EU, with projections that the number will double in Western Europe and triple in Eastern Europe.

In most European countries, health, social and pension systems are preparing for the challenge of the 21st century by providing the necessary resources (human, financial and psychological) for the dignified lives of the sick and their families.

On a global level, scientists have yet to discover a cure for the various forms of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease, but one thing is clear: sport as a preventive health activity could slow down or even prevent the disease. Regularly leading a healthy lifestyle and exercising significantly reduces the risk of various forms of dementia and Alzheimer’s.

We have been running together for five years!  Come run with us on the 7th of October to outrun dementia together!
